Refreshed inspiration….

Like many other Shared Interest members, I spent Saturday at the AGM & Members’ Day in York. It was a great chance to hear how the organisation is doing but more importantly it was a wonderful opportunity to hear inspiring stories from staff and producers that reminded us all why we invest and why we are trying to increase the levels of investment. Fairtrade Fortnight Challenges 6 -the last two!

Phew! Fairtrade Fortnight is over and just in time I managed to complete the last two challenges on the Fairtrade Fortnight Member Challenge list.

After heading across to Falkirk on Sunday morning to give another in the series of talks about Shared Interest to churches there, we cooked a great salmon and pea risotto for dinner. We used a brand new fairly traded rice from Malawi (in fact the rice is so new it has only been available in the UK since the start of Fairtrade Fortnight). And we took a photo too!!

The rice is part of a new Malawi Kitchen range being developed by Just Trading Scotland – a new joint venture between The Coach House (Balmore) and Rainbow Turtle. Just Trading Scotland is working in partnership with Imani Development and the Scottish Government to develop new fair trade markets for Malawian producers. The first new fair trade product introduced as part of this project is the rice – it is Kilombero Long Grain Aromatic Rice and is grown by NASFAM farmers in the north of Malawi. And, though I say it myself, the risotto was very tasty!!  Continue reading

Fairtrade Fortnight Challenges – 5

Tracy Mitchell is a Shared Interest ambassador and the views expressed herein are her own and do not necessarily represent the views of Shared Interest Society.

Last count 10 done, 4 to go! So how am I getting on the last few challenges from the Fairtrade Fortnight Member Challenge list?

Well first thing Tuesday morning saw me in Tesco handing in campaign postcards – asking them to carry on stocking Divine. I’ve also publicised this campaign to my church e-group so hopefully Tesco’s will get a few cards – you can join in by downloading the campaign card from Christian Aid.

Then after a couple of meetings in Edinburgh, I headed down to Dumfries yesterday afternoon. I was on the panel at the Fair Trade film/debate evening organised by the local Fairtrade Group. It was a great evening. We watched four good short films: “Fields of Gold” a fairly old film about Fairtrade bananas and the difference they make to families in the Windward Islands, “Matthew’s Story” a Co-operative film narrated by Matthew and giving child’s perspective on Fairtrade, “Changing Lives – the Fairtrade Story” highlighting the link between Fairtrade cocoa from Ghana and consumers in Wales and finally “Recipe for Disaster” a Christian Aid film on Trader Justice. The films and others on Fairtrade, except Matthew’s story, can be seen on the Community channel website.

So two more complete and just two to go! I still haven’t got my camera out for the photo challenge and I need to try a new fairly traded product!

Fairtrade Fortnight Challenge 4

Tracy Mitchell is a Shared Interest ambassador and the views expressed herein are her own and do not necessarily represent the views of Shared Interest Society.

By Wednesday last week I’d reached 9 completed challenges from the Fairtrade Fortnight Member Challenge list. I’ve hardly stopped since then but I’m not sure I’ve added any new ones to my total…..

On Friday I went to Renfrewshire’s Fairtrade Business Brunch. Renfrewshire has recently achieved Fairtrade Zone Status and has a very active FT campaign running. The speakers at the event included Fergus Ewing MSP, Barend Salomo the Chairperson of Wupperthal Rooibos Tea Association in South Africa and Liz Cotton from Rainbow Turtle. Wupperthal have a trade credit facility with Shared Interest and I understand Barend had been in to see Kirsteen and Geoff in Newcastle earlier in the week. Lunch time saw me taking part in a photo call with Paisley’s local MSPs – with a huge pile of a brand new fair trade product – rice from Malawi. But…I still haven’t got my camera out for the photo challenge!

Saturday morning saw me driving to Balerno – just outside Edinburgh. I had been asked to have a Shared Interest stall the Balerno Fair trade Group’s annual coffee morning – it was a very well supported event with lots of families from the community there as well as the local MSP. As well as teas and coffees with plenty of home baking, there were stalls from Tearcraft, the One World Shop, and several other organisations, face painting and “pedal your own smoothie” – an exercise bike linked up to a blender to make smoothies – plus of course the chance for me to I speak to folks about Shared Interest. So maybe that’s spread the word ticked off! Continue reading

Fairtrade Fortnight Challenges 3

Tracy Mitchell is a Shared Interest ambassador and the views expressed herein are her own and do not necessarily represent the views of Shared Interest Society.

When I wrote my last blog I was getting on pretty well with the Fairtrade Fortnight Member Challenge list – six down, eight to go!

So what have I been up to since then? Well Monday evening saw me in Edinburgh for the Lord Provost’s reception – it was good to meet Ruth for the first time and fantastic to hear from Towera Jalakasi from Malawi who has extensive experience working to empower small businesses and promoting fair trade amongst a wider range of producers in Malawi. She is on the Board of COFTA and is touring Scotland over the next two weeks, hosted by the Scottish Fair Trade Forum – the group that is working to make Scotland a Fair Trade Nation. I am on the Board of the SFTF representing East Dunbartonshire Fairtrade Steering group – and on Tuesday I went to the latest Fairtrade Steering group meeting. The steering group has agreed to upload the Shared Interest Schools pack to their schools intranet which will mean it will be available to all 22 primary and 8 secondary schools in the area. Existing F14 activity, done (although there are events to follow) and Schools involvement – tick! Continue reading

Fairtrade Fortnight Challenges – 2

Tracy Mitchell is a Shared Interest ambassador and the views expressed herein are her own and do not necessarily represent the views of Shared Interest Society

So where were we? Two down, and two in progress ……. – you will recall I’m referring to the Fairtrade Fortnight Member Challenge list.

Yesterday was our church fair trade breakfast – it went well, although it was not as well attended as we’d have liked (so no profit that I can donate to the Foundation this time I’m afraid). We enjoyed some great food and chat and the stalls from Comfort Rwanda and Tearcraft were inspiring, Continue reading

Fairtrade Fortnight Challenges I

As Fairtrade Fortnight approaches, I thought now was a good time to draft my first blog! Inspired by the Member Challenge list, I have written out my cheque for an increase in my account for each day of Fairtrade Fortnight. That’s the easy one done but what about the other challenges?
