Fairtrade Chocolates, Oranges and Christmas Memories

I remember always getting an orange in the bottom of my stocking.  My sister would often ‘swap’ me hers for some of my chocolate coins.  I’m not quite sure why I agreed to this as although I really like oranges, I prefer chocolate any day!  I will be filling my sister’s stocking this year, and she mine, and while I won’t be filling it with oranges and chocolate coins (pushing thirty I think she may be expecting something a little more grown up!) I have been considering what I put in there for her.  Not to neglect our childish sides I did send her a Divine Chocolate advent calendar so she could get a Fairtrade chocolate fix in the run up to Christmas.

They say you often end up giving presents that you would like to receive so following in this tradition there are a large number of fair trade gifts featuring in my sister’s goodies this year.  A beautiful butterfly brooch I found from The Fair Trade Shop in Ipswich on a recent trip that way for work.  She loves butterflies and I love fair trade, best of both worlds.  She also likes all things bright and cheery in the kitchen so I found a Sarah Smith Fairtrade cotton Tea towel at the Wales Fair Trade Fair in Abergavenny back in October (I learnt well from my mum to start my Christmas shopping early!).

While not every item is fair trade there are a fair number of them in there and among the gifts I’m giving other people.  Whether or not my fair trade views are picked up by friends and family and reciprocated in their gifts to others I do not know but by giving fair trade I know I am passing on the message to them and if nothing else fair trade can make for a different discussion around the dinner table!

I may even sneak in a fair trade orange and bag of chocolate coins ‘for old times’ sake’ and I just hope my sister doesn’t read this!
