Planes, trains and automobiles

The Foundation supported this project through our Carbon Offsetting Scheme, so for every flight, train or car journey you take related to work you inform Amy and we calculate the amount of carbon this emits through this handy little calculator on the climate care website http://www.jpmorganclimatecare.com/ .

We then donate this money directly to a project that works to offset this – thus we incur no administration costs (unlike many carbon off setting organisations) and we have direct involvement as to where the money is being spent and what the impact of this is.

So….I can hear you all thinking….where was our money spent and what was the impact? Well here it is….

THE RWANDAN STOVE PROJECT

  • An average Rwandan family is composed of 5 people, when using traditional stove the family consume between 7 and 9 kg of fuel wood per day. The same family in the same conditions consumes 3,5kg of fire woods per day when using the new stove.
  • One stove saves a minimum of 3,5kg of fire woods per day or 1060kg per year this corresponds to 0,25ha of wood lots per year.
  • Shared Interest provided a Rwandan community with 20 stoves as at cost of around £25 per household. In addition to the construction of these stoves we provided through our local partner REDO, basic education on hygiene, sanitation, health and diet to care for the entire family and home as well as basic agricultural health related skills such as vegetable gardening, waste disposal, organic farming and energy.
  • The 20 stoves that Shared Interest Foundation funded save :1060kg x 20= 21200 kg of fire woods or 5hectors of wood lots per year – which is almost 3 football pitches a year!
